Machakos prioritizes settlement of pending bills

The County Government of Machakos has prioritized payment of pending bills in order to enhance the County’s credibility and foster a more stable financial environment.

Speaking at the Senate on Monday when she led a team from the department of Finance to respond to audit queries on the 2023/2024 Financial Year, Governor Wavinya said her administration had cleared pending bills amounting to over Sh108 Million in the last eight months.

Governor Wavinya said a further allocation of Sh553 Million had been set for payment of pending bills in the 2025/2026 Financial Year.

“We have paid Sh108 Million. This is clear indication that the management continues to prioritize payment of inherited pending bills amidst the available limited financial resources.” She said

She added that the County Government had submitted a supplementary budget to the County Assembly for approval in order to curb arbitrary reallocation of resources.

Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu urged the governor to audit genuine pending bills and pay contractors as some have had their property auctioned due to unpaid claims after rendering services to the County government.

Public Accounts Committee(PAC)Vice Chairman Johnes Mwaruma who chaired the session commended the County government of Machakos for their effort in streamlining service delivery.

He said the Senate appearance apart from being an accountability process was also a capacity building exercise.

“Machakos you are not badly off. You are trying but stretch yourselves a bit to deliver better services. We want to see better services in the counties.” Mwaruma said.
