In a significant stride towards enhancing educational opportunities for individuals with visual impairments, the Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind (MTIB) has launched Phase I of its new Inclusive Smart Library.
Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, addressing attendees during the launch, expressed her pride in witnessing the development of a facility designed specifically for individuals with visual impairments.
“This moment brings us a step closer to bridging the inclusivity gap for persons with disabilities,” she declared.
Her remarks highlighted the importance of equal access to knowledge and opportunities, asserting that institutions like MTIB empower learners to realize their aspirations.
“A library, like this one, is a nation’s investment in its future, capturing the essence of libraries as pivotal spaces where knowledge and culture converge, opening doors to endless possibilities.” She said.
She said that the library is part of broader initiatives to promote inclusion in Kenya, in line with the government’s commitment to disability rights enshrined in the Constitution and frameworks like Vision 2030.
“The recent enactment of the Persons with Disability Act, 2025, reinforces these commitments, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can participate fully in society.” Wanjau said.
She added that, “It is a call to action for all stakeholders to advocate for digital and educational inclusion to secure a brighter future for all learners, regardless of their abilities.”
MTIB Chief Principal Dr. Nduku Mutua described the commissioning of the Inclusive Smart Library as a pivotal moment in creating equitable educational opportunities for all learners, particularly those with visual impairments.
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club of Kilimani Alfajiri for their donation of assistive devices and resources that have been instrumental in realizing the initiative.
“Your support has not only equipped this library but has also given our trainees a doorway to knowledge, independence, and hope for a brighter future,” she acknowledged.
Dr. Mutua emphasized the significance of the library as a space for innovation and growth.
“We believe that with these resources, you will rise to your full potential and become leaders, innovators, and agents of change in society.” She said.
