Machakos county shifts focus to strengthening municipalities for sustainable growth

Machakos County is embarking on a transformative journey aimed at bolstering its municipalities, a move that is poised to redefine urban governance and development within the region.

Speaking during a sensitization workshop held in Mombasa, Governor Wavinya addressed the County Executive Committee members regarding crucial issues such as enhancing urban governance, implementing the Urban Areas and Cities Act, and advancing the Machakos City Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP2) focused on land tenure regularization.

“This discussion is coming. When we are thinking about the future of our municipalities, upgrading and preventing slums, and addressing related policy issues, it has been repeatedly said the future is urban, but I say the future lies in municipalities.” She said.

She affirmed that the county government is committed to passing necessary policies that will provide tangible benefits to the citizens of Machakos.

“As a cabinet, I can assure you we are going to support, we will pass it. We have discussed it; we are just sitting for the last meeting today and then move it to the County Assembly,” she added

Under Governor Wavinya’s leadership, the focus on municipalities is expected to create a framework that encourages orderly urban growth that involves integrating infrastructure development, social services, and environmental sustainability into the planning processes of municipal areas.

The governor’s commitment extends to inclusivity, ensuring that the needs of all residents, particularly vulnerable populations often affected by urban poverty, are adequately addressed.
