Revitalizing Machakos Coffee Sector: A Sh45 Million Investment in Cooperative Societies

Machakos County has announced a significant revitalization initiative for the coffee sector, backed by a substantial grant of KSh 45 million under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

Governor Wavinya Ndeti speaking during the launch of the Agripreneur Model at Kasinga Coffee Society, she expressed optimism regarding the impact of the funding.

“This funding will go a long way in modernizing processing facilities, boosting productivity, improving coffee quality, and ensuring better earnings for Machakos farmers,” Wavinya said.

Five coffee cooperative societies in the region have been identified as beneficiaries of this initiative, each receiving significant financial support to enhance their operations.

These societies include Kasinga Farmers Cooperative Society, which received KSh 8,469,750; Kaliluni Farmers Cooperative Society, awarded KSh 9,030,000; Mukuyuni Farmers Cooperative Society, which received KSh 8,600,000; Kilalani Farmers Cooperative Society, granted KSh 9,910,000; and Kambusu Farmers Cooperative Society, which bagged KSh 9,810,580.

The direct impact of this investment extends beyond mere financial assistance; it is set to modernize processing facilities, which is crucial in an industry where quality and efficiency directly correlate with profit margins.

A key component of this initiative is the introduction of the Agripreneur Extension Model, a youth-driven, technology-enabled program designed to engage and empower the next generation of agripreneurs.

With 170 trained individuals actively supporting farmers, the program focuses on capacity building through training, data digitization, access to quality inputs, and creating market linkages.

Additionally, it aims to ensure that farmers have continued support in livestock vaccination and strengthening agricultural extension services, vital elements in maintaining sustainable farming practices.

Governor Wavinya also acknowledged the efforts of former Agriculture County Executive Member Catherine Mutanu, praising her for laying the groundwork for entrepreneurship through community groups.

Mutanu’s recent appointment as the Finance and Economic Planning County Executive signals a continued commitment to integrating agriculture within broader economic strategies.
