Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has announced the ambitious recruitment of 4,500 young individuals into the Machakos Youth Empowerment Programme.
Speaking during the Machakos area women’s prayer day at A.I.C Bomani she said that the most impactful investment lies in nurturing the potential of young people.
Governor Wavinya outlined a multi-faceted approach to youth empowerment designed to equip the younger generation with essential skills and opportunities.
Of the selected youth, 1,500 will join the Machakos youth service, where they will have the chance to acquire practical skills through vocational courses.
“These courses range from hairdressing to event management, plumbing, electrical engineering, and building, preparing them not just for jobs but for careers that can sustain them and their families,” she said.
Governor Wavinya added that, “Upon completion of these courses, participants will be provided with job equipment, ensuring they have the necessary tools to start their journey in various trades.”
In addition to vocational training, the governor revealed plans for digital inclusivity.
“A further 1,000 youth will have the opportunity to join digital schools, acquiring skills that are increasingly vital in our technology-driven world. Another 1,000 will be trained in driving schools, and an additional 1,000 will receive boda boda licenses, enabling them to contribute to the local economy while supporting their households,” she said.
Governor Wavinya also urged parents to engage with their children, suggesting they listen to their concerns and ideas.
“Our youth know the root of their challenges,” she said while she called upon parents to understand their roles in the partnership.
Part of Wavinya’s initiative, dubbed ‘ng’arisha mta’, aims to involve another 3,000 youth in community projects.
The program is expected to see these young individuals working together to create weirs and sand dams along local rivers.
“Our goal is to change the lives of our youth,” Governor Wavinya said.
