The second cohort of Machakos Youth program has commenced to empower youth by equipping them with essential life skills and vocational training at the Machakos Training Camp.
This year’s program has welcomed 1,500 youths, a substantial increase from the 1,000 trainees admitted during its inaugural year.
Speaking during the reporting exercise, Machakos County Executive for Education Dr. Consolata Mutisya said the expansive reach of the program of the selected trainees were recruited from all 40 wards of Machakos County.
She said that the training initiative aims to address the high levels of unemployment and underemployment faced by the youth.
“The program provides participants with invaluable life skills and discipline to lay a strong foundation before they delve into one of eight vocational training areas based on their interests.” She said.
The vocational courses available cater to a diverse set of career paths, ensuring that the youths can explore and develop skills tailored to their strengths and the demands of the local labor market.
Dr. Consolata said that the approach fosters an environment where participants not only learn but also grow in confidence, preparing them for meaningful employment opportunities.
One of the trainees, Lenah Mutinda from Kalama Sub-County, shared her excitement and gratitude upon being selected for the program.
“This has restored my hope for a better future.” She said.
Her reflection was echoed by many parents who accompanied their children on this pivotal journey.
The County Government has expressed intentions to expand the program in future years indicating a clear recognition of the necessity for continued investment in the youth.
